Local Government Road Safety Project
Community road safety was the winner when a record number of delegates attended the Road Safety and Traffic Management Stream at New Horizons - the IPWEA (NSW Division) Annual Conference.
Feedback from conference delegates emphasised the valuable opportunity afforded to learn more about road safety and safe and efficient traffic management from a range of professional perspectives including education, injury management and engineering.
Planning and evaluation were a significant focus for the stream. A presentation on road safety planning emphasised the need for ongoing monitoring to ensure that a council wide road safety strategic plan is well implemented. Evaluation was the focus for papers on local 'speed' and 'pedestrian safety' projects and a report on the 50km/h Urban Speed Limit Initiative which now involves more than 100 councils across NSW.
Delegates heard about some road safety and traffic management issues associated with the upcoming Olympics and had a glimpse of some potential intelligent transport system contributions to future safety and management outcomes.
The New Horizons Conference CD ROM includes most conference papers and is available for a nominal fee from the IPWEA office. For more information regarding the IPWEA/RTA Local Government Road Safety Project contact Julie Edwards ph: 02 8267 3012
Water Directorate
The Overview of the 1996 Australian Drinking Water Guidelines was issued in early May 2000 to member councils. We are certain that the document will assist water managers and will fulfil its objective of making councils aware of the full implications of implementing the NHMRC 1996 Drinking Water Guidelines.
A workshop was held in mid May with DLWC to clarify issues and to provide feedback on the draft Section 64 Developer Charges Guidelines. A good collection of comments from across the state was submitted to the DLWC and the comments can be viewed on our web site Water Directorate
In conjunction with the Best Practice Award to be presented at the 2001 IPWEA Annual Conference, the Water Directorate is continually seeking details of innovative water and wastewater engineering projects to publicise and promote. The database provides a further opportunity to share industry knowledge. This advice should not be limited to major projects and we welcome any practical advice and solutions to small and large problems that could be helpful to others in the same situation.
For more information about any of the Water Directorate's activities please contact Gary Mitchell or ph: (02) 8267 3010
