About the IPWEA/RTA Local Government Road Safety Project

The IPWEA/RTA Local Government Road Safety Project is a joint project of the IPWEA and the RTA. Initiated in April 1993, the Project is one element of the Local Government Road Safety Program.

Priorities for the project are to:

  • increase the priority of road safety in local government activities and management plans
  • increase the expertise (knowledge, understanding, skills) of road safety practice at the local government level
  • encourage local government to develop and implement road safety plans as part of their 3-5 year management plans and reporting plans
  • assist with the coordination and networking at a local/state and national level
  • monitor and report on the IPWEA/RTA project and assist with the evaluation of the effectiveness of the Local Government Road Safety Program in achieving its goals.

Key project activities include:

  • Planning: With council personnel as its key target the project promotes the development of council road safety strategic plans. The working draft 'A Guide to Developing Council Road Safety Strategic Plans' is available from the IPWEA to support council road safety planning.
  • Training: The IPWEA is a Registered Training Organisation for the delivery of the Certificate IV in Road Safety, a flexible competency based training program for road safety professionals.
  • Communication: The quarterly Local Government Road Safety Program News and the project website www.ipwea.org.au/rsp provide up to date information.
  • Funding: IPWEA/RTA Local Government Road Safety Project Grants are offered to councils on an annual basis to support local road safety activity. Funding is provided by the Motor Accidents Authority.
  • Awards: The Local Government Excellence in Road Safety Awards, one category of the IPWEA Excellence awards, are presented annually to recognise the outstanding achievement of councils in road safety education/behaviour/planning aspects.
