The 2004 Local Government Excellence in Road Safety Awards were presented at the Institute of Public Works Engineering Australia (NSW Division) (IPWEA) Annual Conference Awards Dinner, held on 24 May 2004 before an audience of around 300 members and guests.
The winner was:
Wollongong City Council for their project 'Drink Safe Walk Safe', which addressed this issue of pedestrian safety, particularly those affected by alcohol. For further information please contact the Road Safety Officer, Claire Campbell on telephone number 02 4227 7261.
The Highly Commended Award was presented to Tamworth City Council (now Tamworth Regional Council), for their project 'Youth on the Move - A Mentor Driving Program for At-Risk Youth'. For further information phone 02 6755 4546.
The awards are sponsored by the Motor Accidents Authority and presented to councils to recognise outstanding achievements in the area of road safety. They are linked to the Local Government Road Safety Program, which is a key road safety partnership between the Roads and Traffic Authority, Local Government Association of NSW and Shires Association of NSW and the IPWEA, to raise the profile of road safety in local government.
The awards attracted 33 nominations this year, representing the work of some 42 councils across NSW, the greatest number of councils involved to date.
