Road Safety Planning
A Guide to Road Safety Planning'A Road Safety Strategic Plan provides a framework and direction for a council, enabling it to work systematically to improve road safety at the local level. It provides a means of focusing the activities of different divisions of council on common road safety goals?Councils with Road Safety Strategic Plans are also better positioned to take advantage of federal and state road and road safety funding.' The introduction to the working draft "A Guide to Developing Council Road Safety Strategic Plans" highlights some benefits for council, and for the community, of council road safety strategic planning. "The Guide" includes a road map to summarise key activities for developing a road safety strategic plan and includes a number of case studies to illustrate approaches for overcoming strategic planning obstacles. Recommendations included in the guide are based on the work of councils across NSW and represent some departures from previously promoted road safety strategic planning practice. The guide includes suggestions regarding the most appropriate forms of consultation and recommends that, for a plan to be most effective, it should be integrated into council's mainstream management processes.
